Training with a workout partner transforms fitness from a chore into a shared experience. Research consistently shows that training in pairs boosts performance and long-term adherence through built-in accountability, increased effort, enhanced confidence, and a higher release of endorphins.

We recently caught up with members Hurstville Aquatic Centre members Sami and Omar to learn how training as a father-and-son duo has transformed their workouts. Together, they demonstrate exactly how a strong partnership can turn fitness goals into lasting daily habits while building quality family connection along the way.

When you train with a partner, skipping a workout requires canceling on someone who is relying on you, which drastically reduces missed sessions.

Sami and Omar rely heavily on each other for that vital extra push. Sami explains:

"We definitely have those days where one of us can't be bothered! Usually, we just give each other a bit of a push and remind ourselves that we'll always feel better once we've finished."

For Omar, training with his dad eliminates room for excuses:

"Having my dad there makes it harder to make excuses. Even when I'm not feeling motivated, I know he's counting on me, so I just show up. Once we're here, we're always glad we came."

We also push each other a bit more than we probably would if we were training alone."

Omar agrees, highlighting the fun aspect of exercising together:

"It's also more enjoyable. We can have a laugh, encourage each other and celebrate the little wins along the way. It's nice having that time together while also working towards our fitness goals."

It's good having someone there to push you when things start getting tough, and it's great seeing Omar getting stronger," shares Sami.

Omar adds:

"I like trying different workouts and classes with Dad. Having someone you know there makes everything more fun, and we're always encouraging each other to keep going."

"Whether it's getting stronger, improving our fitness or just being more consistent, it's great having someone there to celebrate the progress with."

For Omar, the benefits go far beyond physical milestones:

"I think that's one of the best parts of training together. Sometimes you don't realise how much progress you've made until your training partner points it out. We've been able to motivate each other through the harder days and celebrate the wins together. It's also given us some really good quality time together as father and son."
